All In One Printer Buying Guide

1) Inkjet or Laser?

All in one inkjet printers are the most common of all multifunction printers sold in the market right now. Their popularity stems from their cheaper upfront prices as well as their compactness hence suitable for use on home / small offices where space might be limited. While they do print reasonably good text documents and better quality colored documents (as compared to the laser models), the printing speed is quite slow. Moreover replacement inks are expensive and might eat up over long periods of time hence suitable for low volume printing environment.

All in one laser printers cost more upfront and due to their bulkiness as well, they are best used in mid-sized offices where space is not a constraint. Their strength lies in their higher quality print output and faster speed as compared to the inkjet versions. Although they are expensive, replacement toners are usually cheap over time hence they are the preferred choice for high volume printing environment.

Since all in one printers vary in functions from machines to machines, decide on your frequent usage to determine buying:

b) Scanner - Since every single all in one printers come with a built-in scanner for scanning text documents for use in copying, faxing or as attachments in e-mails etc, resolutions do play an important role in this. For best scanning results, opt for at least 9600 dpi which should be sufficient to scan photos and detailed images fairly good.

c) Faxing - Built-in fax machine is an option for all in one printers. For personal or home office that does not use (or rarely use) fax machines for faxing, it’s advisable to choose all in one printers that does not come with fax machine to save money.
