Webcams

Also referred to as web cameras, webcams are able to transmit audios, videos and/or still images over the internet and hence they’ve become cheapest way to keep in touch with family and friends who are far away yet able to "see" them in person and chat with them in real-time. Webcams are also useful as a form of video conferencing with colleagues from abroad minus the high cost. As webcams have become more popular due to the rise of chat rooms and video sites such as YouTube, it is therefore useful to know how to shop around for some of the best webcams to get the most out of your investment.

Webcam Buying Guide

1) Image Quality

It depends on 2 factors namely the resolution and frame rate. Resolution is expressed in pixels with most webcams having either 320×240 pixels or 640×480 pixels. These are low compared to digital camcorders but that’s the best that any webcams can offer.

Frame rate is expressed in frames per second (fps) with common values between 15 - 30 fps. The higher the fps, the better the video quality due to less flickering.

2) Color Or Black & White?

Webcams that support color images are useful when talking to family and close friends or when you need to store them as archives of your personal life history. Although slightly more expensive than that of monochrome version, it’s worth it.

3) Price

The prices for most webcams lie within the $50-$100 range with some better quality models going as high as $150. Do take note that even the best quality webcams do not even reach the level of quality that found in digital camcorders so a middle price range is your best option.
