Sewing Machines
The old Singer sewing machine that mum had been using for the past 20 years just broke down. It’s beyond repair as there’s no spares available. Since mum likes sewing and can’t do without it, she’s hoping that you would get her a new one. Since there’s too many models to choose from, selecting some of the best sewing machines from so many out there makes it easier to stitch different fabrics and projects and most of all keeps mum smiling.
Sewing Machine Buying Guide
1) Mechanical Or Electronic?
Most mum would be familiar with the mechanical version since at one time or the other, they would have used it before. They are cheap and since have fairly limited stitching sizes, they are suitable for basic functions such as stitching torn clothes. Using just a knob for stitch size selection and foot lever to power the needle, they are the easiest to be accustomed to. As such they are suitable for beginners.
The electronic version operates similar to that of the mechanical ones except that instead of using a foot pedal, an electrical impulse powers the needle. You’ll be surprised that due to mass production, they are cheaper than the mechanical ones but offer more stitching size and style options yet simple to operate at the push of a button. Most recommended for beginners as well as intermediate users.
2) Computerized Or Embroidery?
Within the electronic type sewing machines family, there are 2 different versions namely computerized and embroidery models. The computerized sewing machine uses series of motors controlled by electronic chips or microprocessors to power the needle. Most, if not all of them have touch screen LCD for settings as well as built-in memory for storing common & specialized stitching styles and patterns.
Embroidery sewing machines are the top-of-the-line machines that offers multitude of sewing options such as the ability to create customized embroidery patterns, tens of different stitch size & style options and many advanced features. This type of embroidery sewing machine is expensive and recommended for advanced users only.
3) Useful Features
a) Built-in needle threader for easier threading through the needle eye.
b) Free arm for difficult sewing areas such as sleeves and trousers hen.
